Is cacao better than coffee?

Cacao and coffee serve different purposes, but for many people, cacao offers a more balanced and sustainable alternative.

Coffee stimulates the central nervous system, often leading to quick energy spikes followed by crashes, and in some cases, anxiety or disrupted sleep.

Cacao, on the other hand, works primarily through the cardiovascular system thanks to theobromine. This results in:

  • steady, long-lasting energy

  • improved blood flow and oxygenation

  • enhanced focus without overstimulation

For those seeking clarity, calm energy, and a more mindful daily ritual, cacao is often considered the better choice.

Does cacao contain caffeine?

Yes, cacao contains a small amount of natural caffeine, but significantly less than coffee.

The primary active compound in cacao is theobromine, which provides a gentler, more sustained form of energy. Unlike caffeine, it does not overstimulate the nervous system.

This means cacao can:

  • support focus and alertness

  • reduce the likelihood of jitters or anxiety

  • be enjoyed later in the day without disrupting sleep for most people

What is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is the purest form of cacao available.

It is made from 100% cacao beans that have been minimally processed to preserve their natural nutrients and active compounds. Unlike conventional chocolate or cocoa powder, ceremonial cacao retains its full integrity both nutritionally and energetically.

Traditionally used in ancient cultures such as the Mayan and Aztec civilisations, cacao was consumed in rituals to support connection, clarity, and emotional well-being.

Today, ceremonial cacao is used as a daily ritual to:

  • enhance mood

  • support mental clarity

  • encourage mindfulness and intention

How do you prepare cacao?

Preparing cacao is simple, but the intention behind it is what makes it powerful.

Basic preparation:

  1. Heat water and/or plant-based milk (do not boil or you will kill the nutrients)

  2. Add 20–30g of ceremonial cacao

  3. Stir or blend until smooth (best to hand whisk, or use a milk frothing machine as they are usually fixed to a lower temperature)

  4. Optional: add spices such as cinnamon, chilli, vanilla, turmeric, ginger powder, ashwagandha, and functional mushrooms... Cacao is a great base for many other superfoods!

Create a ritual:

Take a moment before drinking to set an intention, whether it’s focus, calm, or creativity.

Cacao is best enjoyed slowly, allowing both the physical and emotional effects to unfold.
